Ram Pressure Stripping Empty Ram Pressure Stripping

Something in space is clearing off entire galaxies.
Introducing, the Galaxy Sweeper; aka 'Ram Pressure Stripping'.
17 January, 2017: Researchers at ICRAR concluded that a process of 'ram pressure stripping' might be knocking galaxies of their gas, preventing new stars from forming and leading them to sputter out much faster than would be expected. Without adequate gas to power new star formation, the galaxies simply get cold and die.
“You can think of it like a giant cosmic broom that comes through and physically sweeps the gas from the galaxies.”

Background:
The ram pressure is the pressure experienced by a solid moving in a fluid medium. It is same as the pressure we exert to push the air while running or cycling.
Similarly, the galaxies are embedded in dark matter clouds. The same ram pressure phenomenon pushes the gas out from a spiral galaxy when it rapidly falls through the hot intergalactic plasma of a massive dark matter cloud. This process is 'ram pressure stripping'.
As is common with majority of galactic phenomena, this stripping is a slow-acting process, of an order of tens of millions of years.
